EDGEWOOD, Md. (WJZ) ―

This current mortgage crisis is forcing more people out of homes they can no longer afford. In many cases, losing your home can also mean losing your pet.

The Aristidou family in Edgewood has not been able to pay their mortgage since October. Charles was an independent trucker, but can no longer afford the high cost of diesel fuel.

Patricia Aristidou told Richard Sher, "I call the mortgage company and they don't want to work with us. They've given us seven days to let them know how we're going to catch up, or they want us to leave the keys and move out."

The Aristidous have a five-year-old cocker spaniel named Zoe.

"We're looking to rent a place, but hardly anyone takes pets," she said.

"Animal shelters are filling up with animals that people are surrendering because of the mortgage crisis. It's tough for everybody," Aileen Gabbey, executive director of the Maryland SPCA, said.

The SPCA is allowing pet owners to put pictures of their pets on its website, in hopes of finding caring, loving homes.
