Hunters Kill 63 Black Bears In Md., Hunt Continues

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ― Hunters in western Maryland have reached the quota for this year's black bear harvest, but the hunt is continuing.

The season started Monday and could run through Saturday, but the Department of Natural Resources had said it would end when the harvest reaches somewhere between 60 and 85 bears. Officials say hunters had killed 63 bears by Wednesday night, but the hunt would continue Thursday.

The season is the sixth since black bear hunting resumed in Maryland in 2004 after it had been outlawed for about 50 years.

Hunting is allowed only in Garrett and Allegany counties. Last year, hunters killed 56 bears in Maryland.
