New Zoo Exhibit Allows Visitors To Feed Giraffes

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

If you've never had the chance to feed a giraffe, Saturday's your lucky day.

Peggy Lee reports a brand new exhibit brings you up, close and personal to the giraffes.

It's feeding time at the Maryland Zoo, but yummy leaves aren't just coming from the hands of experienced keepers.  Some tiny amateurs are also joining the fun.

Starting this Saturday, a brand new exhibit is open to the public where everyone has the opportunity to feed the zoo's five giraffes.

"We're so excited to have guests have this experience.  It's almost like being a animal keeper, and it's such an interactive, close up look at giraffes.  They're such a wonderful animal," said Rebecca Gullott, zoo keeper.

Although it's not officially open, Wednesday's preview is drawing quite a crowd.

"I like they have spots and they're orange," said one visitor.

Along with entertainment, it's an educational lesson in these long-neck giants.

"Eighteen inches long and a prehensile tongue means that they can grasp with it," said Gullott.

So if you've got a free day, why not throw caution to the wind and be a zoo keeper for a day. For just two bucks a twig you can be up, close and personal.

"In order to have people care about conservation it's really, really important to have them experience the animals, not just look at them but really have an interactive experience," said Gullott.

The exhibit opens Saturday and will be open daily from 10:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.
