Humane Society Investigating Downer Cow

WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) ― The Humane Society releases another video they claim shows inhumane treatment of cows.  This time one of the animals is right here in Maryland.

As Derek Valcourt explains, the state is investigating while the Humane Society calls for reform.

The Humane Society of the United States found this animal, called a downer cow because it cannot stand, at the Westminster Livestock Auction Facility.

Humane Society workers investigating auction houses in four states videotaped the animal over the course of several hours.  When, after they returned the next morning to find the animal still suffering and unable to rise, they say they called for help from local animal control, which soon put down the injured animal.

"These animals are really falling into regulatory limbo," said Wayne Pacelle.

The Humane Society claims neglected downer cows are commonplace at livestock auctions around the country, not just at slaughterhouses.

It was earlier this year the Humane Society released a disturbing undercover video of downer cows being abused at a California slaughterhouse, sparking a massive meat recall and Congressional hearings.

"The point is dealing with the downer issue at the slaughterhouses is not enough.  We've got to deal with the issue at the intermediate markets because that's where animals are coming and going and no one is watching," Pacelle said.

The Maryland Cattleman's Association says the downer cow left at the Westminster auction was dropped off by a trucker and never accepted by the auction owner.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture says one of their inspectors was at the auction and knew about the downer cow but was not aware of any mistreatment.  They say they are now investigating the complaint and will take action within the next two weeks.
