Mayor & Wife Get New Dog After Police Shooting

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ― After a month of tears and grieving, there are smiles on the face of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo and his wife, Trinity Tomsic.

Back on July 29, Prince George's County Police, thinking a 32-pound package of marijuana left on their doorstep involved the Calvos, stormed the house moments after the mayor took the package inside the house.  In the seconds that followed, both of the family's black labs were shot by police.

The mayor and his wife had nothing to do with the grass. It was part of a mailing drug ring.  Two people were arrested and police apologized for the incident.  A federal investigation is underway.

Richard Sher reports 10 days ago, the Calvos turned to Lab Rescue and adopted 13-month-old Marshall, an adorable black lab.

"To be honest, I still can't believe what happened.  We don't know what we would do if we didn't have Marshall," Trinity said.

"While another dog can never replace Payton and Chase, Marshall brings such joy to our lives and is helping in the process of healing," Cheye said.

"They came to us.  Marshall's a perfect match," said Cheri Markey.
