Bear In Halethorpe Area Caught

ARBUTUS, Md. (WJZ) ―

Department of Natural Resources officials have caught the black bear Maryland residents have seen traveling the state in recent weeks.

Kelly McPherson reports DNR officials tranquilized the bear Wednesday night and captured it 30 minutes later, placing it in a barrel for transportation.

The bear is a one-and-a-half-year-old male and weighs 100 pounds.

"To me, he looked like he weighed 300 pounds. It was scary," said Alycia Davis, who saw the bear.

DNR officials took the bear back to western Maryland, where they believe the bear is from.

"This isn't terribly unusual, considering the state's expanding bear population, which is around 500," said Paul Peditto, head of the Department of Natural Resources' bear management team.

The bear had traveled along river corridors from St. Mary's County through Calvert and Anne Arundel counties in recent weeks.

Dozens of residents had reported seeing the black bear in the Arbutus area Tuesday and Wednesday.
