After sorting through more than 1,630 entries, the choice has been narrowed to five potential names for the first-ever elephant baby born at the Maryland Zoo.
"We were thrilled with the selection of names, and it was no easy task to narrow the list to this point," said Don Hutchinson, president and CEO of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. "There were some very creative submissions, and people put a great deal of thought into their choices." The names were voted on from a list of 11 by a panel of Zoo enthusiasts including First Lady of Maryland Katie O'Malley, Mayor Sheila Dixon, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, and students from Mount View Middle School, The Jemicy School and The Stadium School.
The winning name will be announced Sat., April 26 when the baby will also make his debut at the zoo with mom, Felix, in their outdoor exhibit yard.
The proposed names are Chewie, Crush, Duke, Samson and Zeus.
