Some sick and starving dogs found in an Anne Arundel County house in August are seeing life anew.
Suzanne Collins reports the dogs have regained their health and are in search of an owner to love.
Three weeks ago life looked quite pathetic for 22 malnourished and flea-ridden dogs, who had scratched much of their fur right off. They were found in an Orchard Beach house filled with filth and feces. The owner and her son face animal cruelty charges.
But there will be no more empty water or food bowls for all but the two dogs who had to be put down. The survivors are enjoying the outdoors for what is believed to be the first time, and they are getting attention they may never have known before.
When the abused dogs came in they were skittish with people and hid in the back of the kennel, but in the three weeks or so since they've been rescued that has changed.
"Now they're just happy to see us when we come in there. They can't wait for us to come in and say hello to them," said Sherry Durm, Animal Control employee.
Tails were wagging wildly Thursday as seven of the dogs have now recovered fully and are ready for adoption. Three are at the Annapolis SPCA and four are at the county animal shelter. Dog lovers have e-mailed like crazy through their ordeal to get updates.
"How are the dogs doing? Have any been adopted yet? Have they survived? What's the condition? So, I know there's a lot of good people out there. I just hope they come forward and give these cute little things personal homes," said Wendy Cozzone with the Animal Welfare Council.
Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold says the horrible discovery has him thinking about an education program on kindness to animals for children.
"I think it's very important we educate our young people about the abuse of animals and what that means. We want to be able to identify these problems early with our children, these psychological problems," said Leopold.
Staffs at the shelter say of the four they have, Dawg would be wonderful with children, Stanley is a little shy of men, Blackie is high energy and Mable is able to offer great love.
More of the rescued dogs are expected to be available for adoption in the near future.
