Baltimore Officials Concerned By Animal Torture

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― City Police are investigating another possible case of animal torture. This time a cat is found tied, burned, and filled with holes.

Suzanne Collins reports it comes just a few weeks after a pit bull was set on fire in Baltimore.

The black cat with white paws had been tortured and then died. A chain was around its neck and tied to a light pole, another rope secured it to the fence.

The photos of the animal's carcass are too gruesome to show. It was severely burned. A 96-round cannister of spent fireworks was beneath its head when Animal Control responded.

"Soon as he saw what the problem was with the cat being chained and tied above the fireworks, he called and we sent an officer to assist him," Bob Anderson of City Animal Control said.

Police are investigating, and BARCS, the nonprofit which runs the city shelter, found the carcass showed even more injuries.

"It had puncture wounds in its abdomen. It had a broken leg. It had another wound the size of a quarter, very deep. Parts of the fireworks were embedded in its nose and eyes," Debra Rahls of BARCS said.

"I heard fireworks and that's what made me come outside," Jo Jo Dixon of Park Heights said.

He says when he came outside early Wednesday, some kids told him they found the cat dead in an alley before blowing it up, but an animal autopsy proves otherwise.

Animal Control says police will check cameras to see if anything was captured on video and interview people who may have witnessed it. An animal foundation has already donated $1,000 for information.

A woman who learned about the case of cat abuse while adopting two cats can't believe it.

"They're little animals. They're friendly animals. You get them to cuddle and to love you, and to do that to an animal, I don't know what kind of person could ever do that," Ashley Auffart said.

Animal Control is asking that anyone with information on this case of animal abuse or any other to call 311 to report the incident.
