1 Killed, 15 Injured In South Texas Prison Riot

THREE RIVERS, Texas (AP) ― An inmate is dead and 15 others hospitalized after a riot at a federal prison in south Texas.

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Deborah Denham says the inmate's death is being investigated. But she does not believe guards at the Three Rivers prison used any potentially lethal force to break up the fight.

No staff members have been injured.

Denham says a pair of fights broke out at the prison early Friday. What sparked the brawl is still under investigation. Denham says the incident was brought under control quickly.

The riot is the second in Texas in recent weeks. Authorities used a stun grenade two weeks ago to break up a riot involving 80 inmates at the federal prison in downtown Houston.
