In an open-air Mass in St. Peter's Square, Pope Benedict XVI formally began his stewardship of the Roman Catholic Church, reaching out to Jews, other Christians and "nonbelievers alike" and asking for prayers from the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and dignitaries gathered as he assumed "this enormous task." Cardinal Jospeh Ratzinger's election to succeed Pope John Paul II followed a papacy which lasted 27 years and guided the Vatican into the 21st century.
