Cable Breaks Loose On San Francisco Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) ― A cable apparently broke loose from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and struck a vehicle Tuesday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said one vehicle was hit by the cable. He said initial reports indicated one person was "shaken up" but was not seriously injured and did not require hospitalization.

He said traffic is backed up to the toll plaza.

Caltrans is expected to temporarily close the bridge. Engineers were responding to the accident to determine whether there was any structural damage.
