Denver Man Dies After Being Shot With Police Taser

DENVER, Colo. (CBS) ― A man died early Monday morning after being shot by an officer with a Taser in Denver, police said.

The suspect was reportedly acting out of control in the area of Yale and Joslin near Wadsworth when officers tried to subdue him. He vandalized cars, broke windows and caused other damage, police said.

That's when one officer reportedly used a Taser on the suspect. He was taken to the hospital and died a short time later. Officials did not indicate what might have caused the man's death.

Yale was closed from Jay to Fenton in southwest Denver early Monday morning as investigators collected evidence and reviewed the scene.

A taser is an electroshock weapon used for subduing a person by administering electric shock that may disrupt superficial muscle functions.

Supporters say that electroshock guns are a safer alternative to devices such as firearms, and can subdue a suspect without undue harm. Detractors say there is too much of a chance for accidents, injuries and death.
