EU Lifts Ban On British Beef Wednesday
LONDON (AP) ―
Industry officials and farmers say British beef producers may face a tough battle in winning back customers when a decade-old export ban is lifted Wednesday.
The ban was imposed in 1996 because of mad cow disease.
The European Union has agreed to lift it because the group's veterinarians have concluded that Britain has met requirements to contain the spread of the disease.
However, a National Farmers Union spokesman says it could take a couple of years for British producers to recover the market share that they lost virtually overnight. Bob Walker says it's "almost like starting from scratch."
