BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Neighbors' Night Out 2 is taking place Sunday in honor of Zach Sowers who was brutally beaten and left in a vegetative state.

Zach Sowers has been in a coma ever since the night four teens beat and robbed him after a night out with friends.

Derek Valcourt reports, after more than eight months with Zach being in the hospital, friends, family and neighbors are pulling together to help Zach's wife with the growing medical bills.

They're helping by spending their money at local bars and restaurants and by giving his wife some needed moral support.

Anna Sowers celebrated her birthday Sunday night with friends because she can't celebrate it with her husband.

Zach Sowers remains in a coma nine months after a group of four teens robbed him and beat him as he walked home from a bar.

He was left for dead just a few feet away from the Patterson Park home he shared with his wife.

Now friends have organized a Neighborhood Night Out getting 16 Baltimore bars and restaurants to donate 10 to 20 percent of their profits to help pay for Zach's lengthy and costly hospitalization.

"If I didn't have the friends I did, I don't know if I would be able to get through this, but because I have so many friends and supporters in Baltimore, it's been a lot easier, and they're the ones that helped organize this event today," said Anna Sowers.

The four teens accused in his beating are already serving prison sentences.

Now Anna Sowers is turning her pain into activism hoping to drum up support for what she calls Zach's Law which would allow murder charges when an attack victim is left in a persistent vegetative state.

"I just think the laws need to keep up with the advances in medicine, and just because they can keep him alive medically doesn't mean that he's still the Zach that I use to know," said Anna Sowers.

Sowers says she hopes she can put some for of Zach's law before legislators by next legislative session.

Restaurants include 2910 on the Square, Baltimore Tap House, Bleachers Sports Bar, Chesapeake Win, Portside Tavern, Don't Know Tavern, No Idea Tavern and Regi's American Bistro.
