Woodlawn H.S. Wins Robot Building Competition

WOODLAWN, Md. (WJZ) ―

It's a celebration going on at Woodlawn High School. The students accomplished a major achievement in science and technology.

Ron Matz reports the school's robotics team has taken home top honors in a recent competition held at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Lunar Warrior Tang was built in six weeks by students at Woodlawn High School, the Techno-Warriors brought home the first place trophy in the Chesapeake Regional Robotics Competition.

"Since it's my first year, I felt really proud of myself contributing to this awesome robot that we've built. I feel very proud to be on this team," said Michael Branch, freshman at Woodlawn High School.

Team members were honored by Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith.

"The importance of this program is that it just shows the commitment of Baltimore County Public Schools to science and technology," said Executive Jim Smith. "It's just so important today for everybody to focus in on science, math and technology and that's exactly what this program does and it does it in a very engaging way. It captures the imagination and the spirit of the kids who participate."

"It's very positive; this is what it's all about. These are those small victories when you look at student achievement and student success that makes being an educator so well worthwhile," said Brian Scriven, principal of Woodlawn High School. "I'm just very excited for the kids, they worked extremely hard."

The county executive took the controls as students explained what the mechanical marvel was made of.

Michael Clash is a mentor and he works year-round with the 18 robotic team members.

The point of the competition is to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of education and careers in science and technology.  Winning a championship always helps too.

"There were a lot of good teams, a lot of different things to see and a lot of different strategies, but you just have to have faith in what you do," said Mariah Williams, junior at Woodlawn High School.

The Woodlawn High Techno-Warriors defeated 55 other teams in the competition including 24 from Maryland.
