Maryland tomatoes aren't part of a national scare over tomatoes and salmonella.
The state Department of Agriculture says Maryland-grown tomatoes are not associated with a multistate salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 167 people and caused restaurants and grocery stores to yank tomato products originating in 17 states.
Maryland authorities say that consumers unsure where their tomatoes came from should contact the store or place of purchase.
Most tomatoes in Maryland aren't ripe yet. Maryland is 19th in the nation in harvested acres of tomatoes, with 120,000 pounds of tomatoes raised commercially in 2006.
