Columbia Man Indicted In Fatal Shooting

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) ― A Columbia man has been indicted in a fatal shooting in Oakland Mills Village.

Ronald McConnell, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the May 17 shooting death of 23-year-old Jason Batts, who is also from Columbia.

The indictment was handed up by the Howard County grand jury this week. It also charges McConnell with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted armed robbery and assault.

The shooting happened in a parking lot at the Stevens Forest Apartments.

Charging documents say an informant told police that McConnell ordered the killing over an ongoing dispute.

Police said Batts' death was the first homicide in Oakland Mills since 2003.
