Winter Soldier Conference Held Near D.C.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) ― Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are meeting this weekend at an anti-war conference in Silver Spring.

The four-day event is called "Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan -- Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations."

It's expected to draw more than 200 veterans of the two conflicts through Sunday.

The conference is modeled after the original Winter Soldier, held in 1971 in Detroit. At that meeting, Vietnam veterans, including John Kerry, spoke out against the war.

This week's conference is timed for the eve of the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war next week.

Dozens of counter-protesters demonstrated outside the conference Friday.
