Company Offers Wind Power For Less Than BGE Bills

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ― A small Maryland company is offering wind power to Maryland electric customers for less than they pay BGE.

The entrepreneur tells Suzanne Collins people can save and also go green.

Baltimore Gas and Electric is required by Maryland law to buy electricity at the cheapest price.  Only about one percent of that energy must come from sources like wind or solar, but a small Rockville start-up offering wind power says it can now beat BGE's prices.

"Consumers in Maryland have the chance to lower their energy bills immediately while helping the environment.  This has never been the case before in Maryland," said Gary Skulnik with Clean Currents.

BGE's winter price has been 11.75 cents per kilowatt hour.  In July, that will rise to 12.66 cents, but Clean Currents says people can lock in for a year or two for just 11.1 or 11.8 cents a kilowatt hour for half or all wind power.

A non-profit promoting climate change says it's earth-friendly.

"Anybody who stays with regular electricity Pepco or BGE is paying extra to take the top off the mountains, extra premium to cause global warming," said Mike Tidwell, Climate Action Network.

BGE says it thinks consumers should be able to shop for the cheapest price.  Clean Currents began buying wind power in 2006 and has grown from two employees to 10.

The small energy company--based in Rockville--has signed up about 250 businesses.  Also, it has signed on more than 1,200 residential customers.

"Our primary reason is we feel very personally about doing everything we can to help the environment, getting our power from clean wind," said Caroline Liberty, boutique owner.

About 10 other companies in Maryland also sell energy over BGE's power lines but most cater only to businesses.

Clean Currents says it buys its wind power from companies with turbines in Texas and the mid-Atlantic.
