Jail Official Says Elderly Fugitive In Bad Health

TOWSON, Md. (AP) ―

A North Carolina jail official says an 81-year-old fugitive captured last week had been living a quiet life and is in terrible health.

Kemely Pickett, who oversees the Sampson County jail where Willie Parker is being held, says he plans to charge Maryland for medical costs being incurred during Parker's incarceration.

Pickett estimates the costs will be about $5,000 a month.

U.S. Marshals say Parker escaped from a Maryland prison 43 years ago.

Officials say Maryland authorities discovered Parker had a North Carolina driver's license while reviewing old cases, and marshals went to the address listed on his license.

Federal marshals found Parker in Clinton, N.C. Wednesday afternoon.
