Settlement Reached In Virginia Tech Shootings

RICHMOND, Va. (WJZ) ― The Commonwealth of Virginia has come to terms with most of the families whose children were either killed or wounded in the April 16, 2007 shootings on the Virginia Tech campus.

A circuit court judge in Richmond approved $11 million to be shared by the families, about $4 million for most of those families who lost children and $100,000 to most of those hurt.  The injured were also awarded medical insurance coverage for life.

Suzanne Grimes' son, Kevin Stern, is from Maryland. He was critically wounded in the attack.

"The money doesn't fix anything. As far as accountability, that will come," she said.

The parents feel the university should have been locked down when two students were shot and killed in their dormitory earlier that morning.

"The university failed to notify the student community, sound any alarms, cancel classes and lock buildings," said Joe Samaha, whose daughter Reema died.

Kevin's mother says a few days after the shooting, she felt guilty that her son, who was sitting next to some who were killed, survived and others did not.
