United Way To Direct Funds To Greatest Ills

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

The United Way of America plans to steer money raised during the next 10 years to support programs directly related to education, income and health care.

United Way president and chief executive Brian Gallagher plans to announce the initiative Thursday during the organization's annual conference in Baltimore.

The announcement coincides with a United Way report showing a decline in health, education and the finances of working families.

United Way leaders say its support of scores of local programs has done little to solve the nation's ills. Gallagher says the organization must redirect its money toward the root causes.

Although the national organization sets the agenda for its local affiliates, it does not have the power to dictate that awards be steered only to education, income and health.
