E-ZPass Overcharges At Baltimore Tunnel

A malfunctioning axle-counting device mistakenly overcharged some E-ZPass users at Baltimore's Fort McHenry Tunnel.
The Maryland Transportation Authority says a malfunctioning axle-counting device mistakenly overcharged thousands of E-ZPass users at Baltimore's Fort McHenry Tunnel.
Alex DeMetrick reports the state is working to pay drivers back.
There's more than light at the end of the Fort McHenry Tunnel. There's also a very large toll plaza. It's the busiest in Maryland, collecting on 45 million vehicles a year.
But last December in lane three, the E-ZPass electronic system was overcharging, upping the $2.00 toll on cars to the $8.00 toll trucks pay.
"I didn't know what was going on," said Rick Williams, EZ-Pass customer.
What was going on was a malfunction of the treadle sensor, which counts a vehicle's axles.
"And so what was happening, there could be a two-axle vehicle like a car or SUV, that unfortunately would get a charge for a three, four or five-axle vehicle," said Kelly Melhem with Maryland Transportation Authority.
It's not clear how many were overcharged by the defective treadle, but it's at least a couple thousand drivers.
It's happened before. Last October on the Bay Bridge, a treadle wore out and 1,000 overcharges went onto bills.
If you think you were overcharged, you can call the E-ZPass Maryland Service Center at
