Wise Avenue Train Garden Delights Thousands

DUNDALK, Md. (WJZ) ― Baltimore has a history of elaborate model train gardens springing up during the holidays.

Mike Schuh visited what many consider the granddaddy of them all--the one at the Wise Avenue Volunteer Fire Company.

It's like stepping into a parallel magical world. Trains emerge blazing with light.

The six levels of imagination delight the senses all in a back rental hall at the Wise Avenue Volunteer Fire Department.

They start setting up in October.

The train garden recreates parts of the community, including diners and the Bromo Tower.  It's a real fantasy town, all done to scale.

"It's been a part of everybody's childhood," said Bob Frances, Wise Avenue VFD.

The garden has been a tradition for 28 years. It has 200 moving parts and six trains.

"It makes it, if not the largest, one of the largest in the state," said Frances.

The garden attracts 25,000-35,000 people a year.

"We were just checking our book and we have people from Hawaii and Russia," said Frances.

The train garden is on Wise Avenue in Dundalk.  It remains open through this weekend.  Admission is a dollar. It's free for kids 7 and under.
