Train Derails In Southwest Baltimore
by Mike Hellgren
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
A train toppled off the tracks in Baltimore City this weekend and
Eyewitness News was on the scene as crews worked to remove the massive mess.
Mike Hellgren reports on the tense moments Saturday morning after the train derailed just off Boston Street.
The tangled mess of a cargo train closed South Newkirk Street. Wheels were turned up in the air as a dozen massive cars laid on their sides.
The wreck happened just after 6 a.m. It was an unbelievable sight for Rick Nyborg.
"You never know what you're going to find on a Saturday morning cruise," he said.
Car after toppled car were visible from I-95.
Investigators had not yet revealed what caused the derailment. No one was injured and the train was not carrying any hazardous chemicals.
Eyewitness News was there as huge cranes were brought in to clear the fallen cars and put them back on the track to be rolled away.
Terry Fry has worked with trains before and came to watch what he calls this rare sight.
"It actually looks like some child had a model train set out here and pulled the cars a little too fast and it just flipped over on its side," he said.
Workers attached cables to the wheels and used the power of those cranes to slowly pull the multi-ton cars right side up.
In a city that's seen several hazardous derailments, these accidents are taken seriously. The best news this time was that no one was hurt and no harmful materials were spread into the environment.
