Officers To Go On Trial In The Beating Of Inmate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Five corrections officers are going on trial this week in Anne Arundel County on second-degree assault charges stemming from the beating of an inmate at the now-closed Maryland House of Correction.

The officers are accused of assaulting inmate Bradford Matthews and accusing him of having a homemade knife thought to have been used to fatally stab another officer the previous day in July 2006.

Defense attorneys plan to argue the beating was justified.

Prosecutors intend to show that the officers used excessive force.

Prosecutors said at a hearing Tuesday that extensive tests could not connect the knife to the stabbing of Officer David McGuinn. The other officers are accused of planting the knife on Matthews.
