Towson Marching Band Will Be In Macy's Parade

More Information On The Towson University Marching Band

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Millions of people around the country watch the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Thursday morning.  This year, a Maryland university will be part of the tradition.

As Derek Valcourt explains, their marching band gets a great spot in the parade lineup.

It was a call Towson University had been waiting for for years, but now the marching band has received an invite to be part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Cue the drum line, horns and Towson Tiger.  The university's marching band got a big send off Monday as they prepared to leave for New York City, where they will perform as the only college marching band in this year's parade.

Band members couldn't be happier.

"I'm going to be right in front of the Smurf.  I'm excited for the Smurf," said sophomore Eric Schmitz.

The University made major strides to improve their marching band in the last five years, going from little more than 70 students to a massive cast of more than 230.

The Macy's parade is icing on the cake for John Miliausakas, the band's director.

"It was a goal that I had from the beginning," he said.  "It would really catapult the band into the big time, so to speak."

Band members know they'll be drumming up some exposure for the school.

"I guess I'm most excited about performing for the NBC cameras and having our minute and 15 seconds of fame," said senior Alec Leventis.

But for many, the trip they've been busy raising funds to pay for is an opportunity of a lifetime.

"When I joined the marching band, I never thought that that would happen.  This was not even part of my wildest dreams," said senior Patricia Burgess.

"It's something you watch every year on Thanksgiving.  You never think you'll be in it," said junior Bobby Lapinksi.

"I'm very excited," Schmitz said.  "I'm freaking out."

The Towson University Marching Band is scheduled to hit Herald Square right around 11:43 on Thanksgiving morning.  You can't miss them; they'll be right by the big blue Smurf.
