Firefighters Report Seeing Tornado In PG County

CLINTON, Md. (WJZ/AP) ―

Mother Nature roared down from the heavens Saturday, bringing a super soaker day in the form of water and ice, as golf-ball sized hail hit Upper Marlboro.

With the rain came the wind, as areas reported gusts at 60 miles or more.

Peggy Lee reports in Prince George's County, firefighters reported seeing a possible tornado touch down in the Clinton-Brandywine area.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady says they reported witnessing what looked like a twister at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

"They thought they saw what they believed to be a circulation as well as what they believed to be debris in that circulation. The damage created by the circulation would be indicative of a very strong storm system, possibly even a tornado coming through the area," said Brady.

Brady says there was a spike in the number of calls about downed trees and power lines in the area. However, no injuries or damage to buildings has been reported at this time.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch for parts of Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia prior to the tornado siting.

On the roads, the weather made for a tricky time and could be blamed for at least one deadly accident in Prince George's County.

"At the height of the storm, down in the Brandywine community, just south of Clinton, there was a car that ran off the roadway and impacted with a tree. And the driver appeared to be killed instantly," said an official.

Conditions improved significantly as the evening came across the region. But in Anne Arundel County, power outages were the primary concern.

"The storm became pretty bad, and the power went off like four times," said Miguel Guzman, store owner.

For Guzman, the loss of power halted business and threatened to ruin store inventory at his store.

BGE says only 400 customers in Anne Arundel County lost power.
