A severely neglected thoroughbred horse was rescued this week and is being nursed back to health on a Maryland farm.
Suzanne Collins reports in northeast Cecil County, the former race horse is getting treatment and care. Meanwhile, a fundraiser will be held Wednesday to help other horses.
The neglected bay gelding has bushy fur and overgrown hooves.
On Monday, Angel Acres Horse Rescue purchased the animal at auction for $200.
Its new owners believe the horse was left in a field and neglected.
An investigation by
Eyewitness News this year showed thousands of former race horses are slaughtered inhumanely and sold for meat in other countries.
Trainer Nick Zito lost a beloved horse after a racing injury recently, and a fan asked the rescue to save another horse in its memory.
That's how the horse named Lota Chief got a second chance.
Angel Acres researched the tatoo in the horse's mouth and learned he was bred in Kentucky and raced in the mid 90s. He never won or made a lot of money. They're not quite sure what he did for the past 12 years, but they do believe for over a year, he has lacked critical care.
A Cecil County couple agreed to house Lota Chief for a month-long quarantine. A farrier will take care of the hooves, and a vet will visit.
"The horse is not sick. It's got a great personality. We can't find any vices. It doesn't nip, it doesn't turn, it doesn't pin its ears," said Nancy Graham.
Nancy and Dan Graham have helped more than a dozen horses, including an arthritic miniature who now enjoys life on their farm.
Dan says one can draw out an animal's better nature with time and care.
"Horses are just like people. They all have their own personalities. Some are real nice, some of them are nasty," said Dan.
It's hoped Lota Chief will be adopted. And while he may not race, he will be a great trail horse.
There will be a fundraiser for Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Padonia Station located at 63 East Padonia Rd. in Timonium.
Fifteen percent of all food and beverage sales will be donated to Angel Acres with the presentation of a valid flyer. Decorated horseshoes will also be on sale. For more information, call
