Honeymooning Baltimore Couple Stranded In Thailand

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Unrest in Thailand is turning one Baltimore couple's honeymoon into a living hell.  Maureen and Eric Simpson, along with thousands of others, are trapped at the airport and there's not a plane leaving the ground.

Kelly McPherson spoke with the stranded couple's family.

Stephanie Theis is starting her sister's wedding scrapbook while the bride and her husband are stuck on their honeymoon in Thailand.

"The wedding was just really beautiful, a fairy tale.  We hoped that their honeymoon would be the same and it's just really unfortunate that it isn't." said Theis.

Thai protesters asking for the prime minister to resign have shut down all airports in the city of Bangkok.  The Baltimore couple's Thanksgiving Day flight was canceled indefinitely.  So for at least four days, the couple and their family have been trying to get home, calling the airlines and embassy for help.

"No flights scheduled at all.  Thai Airlines isn't answering their phone," she said.

The Simpsons are two of more than 300,000 foreigners stuck in Thailand.

France sent a 500-seat Boeing 747 to pick up some of its stranded citizens.  The U.S. has yet to help.

"Yes, we really want Maureen and Eric home but everybody should be able to fly safely and get home to their lives after they have a vacation," Theis said.

Dozens of protesters have been injured during this conflict.  The Thai economy is losing millions of dollars as its tourism and business sectors suffocate without air travel.

As for the Theis family, they just want the newlyweds home safely.

The Theis and Simpson families are trying to reach out to Maryland congressional members for help.  Even if the Thai airports were to re-open right now, it would take at least a week to get everything operational.
