Teen Arrested In New Father's Stabbing
CATONSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ―
The prayer of a grieving widow is answered on the same day she said goodbye to a husband who never got to meet his newborn son.
Mary Bubala reports five days after 19-year-old Carlos Santay-Carrillo was fatally stabbed after filling up at a Catonsville gas station, 17-year-old Daniel Eugene Thompson, Jr. was arrested and charged with his murder.
"I was very happy to hear that they had caught the guy. They told me he had confessed to everything," said family friend, Bertha Anderson.
Carlos' wife Carla and Anderson attended his wake at a New Carrollton church.
It was the first time she'd seen her husband since the day she went into labor with Carlos Jr. Last Saturday Carlos was preparing to take her to the hospital when Thompson allegedly stabbed him during a robbery attempt. His neighbors are almost speechless.
"I can't believe it. I can't believe that child was involved," said one neighbor.
But surveillance video and an anonymous tip lead investigators to Thompson's Granville Road home.
"So now detectives had a good idea of what the suspect was wearing and roughly what he looked like. They were able to put that together with the information from the informant. They were able to track down his full name and address," said Bill Toohey with Baltimore County Police.
Congressman Elijah Cummings was among the first to come to Carlos' aid.
Cummings released this statement.
"The circumstances surrounding Mr. Santay's death are heart-wrenchingly tragic, and my thoughts and prayers continue to go out to his widow and their baby boy. However, I am offered hope by the ability of our community to rise together in the midst of such sorrow.
"Through the tireless efforts of the Baltimore County Police Department, the Metro Crime Stoppers, and the men and women who had the courage to stand up and report the information that led to this morning's arrest, we now have the opportunity to see that justice is served. While nothing will ever bring Mr. Santay back to share with his wife the joys of watching their new son grow into a man, it is my hope that some comfort can be found in the spirit of compassion and shared humanity that has been demonstrated over the past week."
The arrest is the best possible news for co-workers who have already started a trust fund for the newborn.
"I'm ecstatic. All of us are very happy that that can be put to rest," said Bridgette Sloan, GM La Quinta Inn.
Carla and her co-workers won't get much time to talk about the arrest or to say good-bye. Carlos' body will soon go back to Guatemala for a funeral his wife can't attend.
"We have to make sure that the baby is well and she is well also," said a friend.
Thompson has no prior criminal record. He is being held without bail until a bail review hearing Friday.
