A Baltimore County teacher was killed Saturday night when a fire broke out in her apartment. Police are still investigating this complicated case. On the first day back since the tragedy,
Kelly McPherson reports the school community is remembering a favorite teacher.
A fire Saturday night killed 34-year-old Kristen Chencus inside her Mount Washington apartment.
"Kristen was a superb teacher, superb mentor to our students. She was creative, innovative, allowed children to reach their full potential," said Ben Shifrin, head of Jemicy School.
She taught middle school language at the Jemicy School in Owings Mills for 10 years. She also coached girls' basketball.
"I would say that Kristen's life is Jemicy. It was the most important thing. And the most important thing about being a teacher, she made a difference in our students' lives," he said.
As her friends and colleagues mourn, unanswered questions remain about the cause of the fire and Chencus' death. An autopsy is being performed.
"Our bedrooms are all in the front, so how was she not able to just climb out the window?" a neighbor said.
Our media partner the Baltimore Sun reports Chencus' former boyfriend plead guilty to arson in 2003. Police have not said if he is linked to Saturday's fatal fire.
"It is our hope that by the end of the summer, we will have a celebration of Kristen's life. She is truly someone to celebrate," Shifrin said.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
