Tanning Beds Another Tax Target In Md. Legislature

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

As Maryland lawmakers from both parties look for ways to get rid of an unpopular tax on computer services, one Democratic delegate has an idea for a service to be taxed -- tanning beds.

Delegate Dan Morhaim of Baltimore County has proposed a new sales tax on tanning services. The tax would apply to tanning beds or the application of so-called "spray-on" tans.

The money would go to a health care fund.

The proposal is the latest in a series of proposed taxes to replace the computer services sales tax, which doesn't take effect until this summer. Other lawmakers have proposed raising taxes on beer, wine and gasoline to make up for repealing the computer services.

But Governor Martin O'Malley and top legislative leaders say a change is unlikely.
