NYC Subway Cars Headed To Sea Off Md. Coast

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) ― Forty former New York City subway cars will be sunk off the coast of Ocean City Friday morning in a manmade reef initiative.

The subway cars are some of about 1,600 that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board has agreed to let be converted into reefs for ocean floors.

Other subway cars are off the coast of New Jersey and Delaware.

Organizers say subway cars make ideal underwater habitats. Friday the cars will be sunk at the Jackspot reef site, about 19 miles southeast of Ocean City in the Atlantic Ocean.

They were supposed to be sunk on Tuesday, but area storms caused a delay until Friday morning.
