An illegal street race ended tragically, claiming the lives of two spectators while another remains in critical condition.
Kai Jackson has more on the incident that happened less than an hour after police patrolled the area.
Dangerous street races are illegally invading highways at night. Once again, one ended in a dangerous crash. This time, it's Interstate 70 near the Beltway early Sunday.
A Chevy Impala driven by 26-year-old Donneil Raeburn of Pikesville veered out of control, killing 21-year-old Mary-Kathryn Abernathy of Columbia and 20-year-old Jonathan Henderson from La Plata. They were standing on the side of the road, watching the race.
Abernathy's family said they cannot believe their daughter died attending a street race, an accident very similar to another one not long ago in Prince George's County.
That accident, a year and a half ago, claimed eight lives in a known racing hot spot. It's just like the end of Interstate 70, according to area residents.
"They just line the cars up here," said an eyewitness. "It will be 80 cars lined up side by side."
Maryland State Police say they know about it.
"Two checks of that area were made less than an hour just prior to the crash and nobody was out there," said Sgt. Arthur Betts.
Police and the State Highway Administration are exploring ways to stop street racing. Potential methods include rumble strips, cameras and other devices.
Investigators say they believe alcohol may have also been a factor but so far no charges have been filed.
