Md. Man Charged In Theft Of Woman's Wheelchair

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) ―

Police in Cumberland have charged a local man in the theft of a motorized wheelchair from a woman with cerebral palsy.

William J. White, 23, faces a hearing later this month on a charge of theft under $500.

Police say two teenage girls, who have also been charged, stole the device from Jolene Griffieth, 33, and abandoned it after joy ride.

White told police he traded some cigarettes for the chair after encountering an unidentified man riding it. Police say White then sold the chair to another man for $165.

The chair was later found damaged in a ditch and returned to its owner, who is trying to get it repaired.

White couldn't be reached for comment. He isn't listed in the telephone directory.
