6 Sickened By Stew In Gaithersburg
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) ―
Authorities say six people in Gaithersburg became ill after eating a stew flavored with herbs that might have been covered in pesticide.
Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says authorities were called to a townhouse about 1 a.m. Wednesday, where 12 people were attending a get-together.
Piringer says half of them ate the stew, becoming nauseous and dizzy -- and in some cases suffering hallucinations. He says those hospitalized range in age from 20 to 70-years-old. Five of the six were in intensive care.
According to a preliminary investigation, the stew was flavored with mint leaves picked from a garden next to the townhouse. Piringer says those who ate the stew exhibited symptoms typical of poisonings that involve organophosphates, highly toxic pesticides.
