State Workers Back At Work After Furlough

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― State workers are back on the job after an extended Christmas holiday.

Political reporter Pat Warren
explains Governor O'Malley shut down state offices to cut back on state spending.

There's one return that wasn't made on Friday: state employees did not return to work, something that wasn't on Mildred Womble's Christmas wish list.

"We're tired of balancing the budget on our backs," she said.

Budget balancing closed state offices Friday by executive order of Governor O'Malley.  The state is trying to make up a budget deficit and factoring two mandatory--and for some, as many as five--worker furlough days will save over $30 million.

But some workers think it's unfair.

"We're just worried," Womble said.

But the Maryland constitution requires a balanced budget.  For now, that means cutting costs.

The second of the two mandatory furlough days is this Friday, the day after New Year's Day.
