Police Using Video To Track Stabbing Suspects
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Brazen violence is caught on tape in the heart of downtown Baltimore.
Mike Hellgren reports in a
WJZ Exclusive, the apparent stabbing, just blocks away from the Inner Harbor, has sparked outrage and calls for action.
The video shows a fight break out at the busy Howard and Fayette intersection. Police say the brawl was among teenage girls.
One person in a green shirt was holding what police call a knife, and she's seen inching closer with the weapon toward a girl in a pink shirt.
Police say there were two victims. One needed 20 stitches to close a stab wound in her back. The other needed six stitches for a gash on her face.
It all happened just blocks from the Inner Harbor and a block from the HippodromeĀ on the light rail tracks.
"It's just disheartening to see young people resolving their conflicts in this way," said Jawauna Greene, MTA spokesperson. "There's a definite need in this community, adults and children alike, to practice civility."
Hundreds of people pass through the area every day where the melee broke out, including Paulina Byrd.
"Oh my God, she turned around with a knife? Right in broad daylight out here... don't make no sense how violence is like that," said Byrd.
City crime cameras also caught the stabbing. Police say they are looking at people of interest who could face attempted murder charges.
No arrests have been made so far.
"This is a startling occurrence in downtown Baltimore," said Kirby Fowler, president of the Downtown Partnership. "Just across the street from where the stabbing occurred, we've got three major apartment buildings 100 percent occupied by mostly young, urban professionals."
Police hope the images and any tips the public can give them will close this disturbing case that's shocked downtown Baltimore.
