Arrests Made In 2 Baltimore Attacks
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Brazen violence is caught on tape, and one-by-one, police intend to track the suspects down.
Mike Hellgren reports a stabbing downtown and a vicious attack in Federal Hill have put people in the bustling neighborhoods on edge.
But new leads have prompted arrests in both cases.
One stabbing happened on light rail tracks just a block from the Hippodrome. The other happened near many popular bars and Cross Street Market in Federal Hill.
Two women are in custody for the violence that scared many who live, work and visit those parts of Baltimore.
The cases are unrelated, but both have put people on edge. Police credit an
Eyewitness News viewer with making the arrest in the stabbing downtown, and investigators say a phone call led to charges in the Federal Hill attack that injured four people.
Dozens of stitches were required for the victim stabbed in
Exclusive WJZ video. The attack happened just blocks from the Inner Harbor on the Howard Street light rail tracks three weeks ago.
Now, investigators have charged 17-year-old high school student Chiffone Frazier in connection with the crime. They said she held the victim's hair while she was being stabbed.
An
Eyewitness News viewer saw the video and recognized Frazier. That viewer's keen eye led to the teen's arrest, and more could follow.
"That's still somebody's child too that they banged outside. I really think they should get everyone who was involved," said Felice Player who works nearby.
"It's just disheartening to see young people resolving their conflicts this way," said Jawauna Greene, MTA spokesperson.
The other vicious attack was last weekend just off Light Street in Federal Hill.
A group of people witnessed a woman hit an MTA bus with her car and threatened to call police on her. That's when a person in that car jumped out and attacked them.
Three men were stabbed with a sharp object, possibly an ice pick or a knife.
In an e-mail, one of the victims said, "I have a bloody ear, elbows, knees, and multiple bruises throughout my body. I have actual footprints on my back from where they were kicking me."
"She's pretty shaken up. She's doing as best as can be expected when something like that happens," said Molly Baker, a friend of one of the victims. "You hear a lot of things like this happen, and nothing comes of it, no one gets arrested."
Now, 21-year-old Ashley Zion is in custody for the crime. Police used technology to track her down. They say a phone call made from one victim's stolen Blackberry lead them to Zion. A victim later identified her as an attacker.
Police are still looking for another woman who they also believe was involved in the vicious assault.
"It's a bit shocking, especially the time it happened and the street it happened on," said Paul Concannon, Federal Hill resident. "They took care of it quickly, which is a good thing."
Two crimes, two arrests and two neighborhoods are sleeping a little more comfortably at night.
Police are still looking for suspects in both attacks.
