Many local jurisdictions in Maryland are gearing up to implement speed cameras.
A law authorizing use of the cameras statewide in school zones and highway work zones takes effect Oct. 1. Police in several places say they'll get started right away.
The town of Cheverly will introduce legislation later this month to start a speed camera program. Likewise in New Carrollton, where Police Chief David Rice says officers are taxed with calls for service and can't always be around to make sure drivers are obeying the speed limit.
Frederick Police Capt. Kevin Grubb says officers get complaints about speeding at every community meeting they go to, and the cameras will help.
Montgomery County is currently the only jurisdiction with speed cameras.
