Fight Against Proposed LNG Facility Continues

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ― The fight against a proposed liquified natural gas facility being built near Sparrows Point continues.

Jessica Kartalija reports Baltimore County residents say their efforts to stop construction are far from over.

A community gathered together Saturday morning  to say no to plans to put three liquid natural gas tanks on the dock next to surplus parts of the Sparrows Point Steel Mill.

"We are definitely against it.  It will definitely have an adverse effect on the community and county as a whole and as a state, so we are against it," said director of Homeland Security Emergency Management Richard Muth.

"I am adamantly opposed to a new LNG facility at Sparrows Point," Sen. Barbara Mikulski said.

As many as 150 tankers per year would bring not only liquefied gas but fear of becoming a terrorist target.  But with the demand for natural gas increasing 50% over the next 20 years and only five terminals in the U.S., corporations are scrambling to build more.

"It's almost the David versus Goliath syndrome that we are dealing with.  Community officials are all against it, and they are still moving forward with the project as if it doesn't matter what we say one way or the other, so we are digging in our heels and we're in for a long fight," Muth said.

Community members want others to see they are not backing down.

"Don't fall into a trap.  Listen to what we are saying, what we are telling: the truth.  The oil industry, the natural gas industry, they will never tell you the truth," said Guido Guarnaccia.

A panel of five is expected to vote on the LNG plant in November.
