Hubble Repair Success Could Benefit Maryland

GREENBELT, Md. (WJZ) ― The success of the Hubble repair mission could help Maryland's role in the space industry blast off.

Political reporter Pat Warren explains Governor O'Malley's new mission is to put the Free State on the front line.

When the Hubble needed a handyman, the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt took on the job, sending the Hubble repair crew in flight and the Space Center over the moon at the success of the mission.

"The good part's still ahead," said Goddard Space Flight Center Director Rob Strain.

The Maryland Space Business Roundtable learned that firsthand from the governor Tuesday.

Watching the video of the Hubble repairs lends inspiration to administration plans to integrate all the efforts and initiatives in state government that have an impact on the space industry, including education, jobs and services.

"This is big economic news for Maryland," Governor O'Malley said.

One of the governor's goals is to make Maryland a national hub for the service of orbiting satellites.
