Council Members File Complaint Against Mayor
SMITHSBURG, Md. (AP) ―
Four of five members of the Smithsburg Town Council have asked for a review by the Attorney General's Office of the commissioning of five picnic pavilions.
In a complaint dated June 12, the council members said the work was awarded to a company in a method that "purposely circumvented" the town's charter.
The council members claim Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers was advised by town attorney Charles Wagaman Jr. to split the project into two contracts to avoid the requirement of advertising for bids.
Smithsburg's charter mandates that the town advertise for bids for projects costing more than $10,000.
Contract documents indicate the town paid $11,250 for the five pavilions. But the project was paid as one contract for $9,000 and a second for $2,250.
