Customers Line Up For The New Verizon BlackBerry

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― BlackBerry lovers lined up at Verizon stores Friday, hoping to buy the new smart phone.

Suzanne Collins reports on this latest technology and how it compares to Apple's iPhone.

Doors opened early to lines at Verizon Wireless stores around the country, as BlackBerry released its new smart phone called the Storm.

"Really, really like it. Tech screen works better than I thought it would. It seems great and I'm constantly complaining that I can't get my e-mail while in the car. We did buy them in fact," said Lacey Egerton.

After the debut of the iPhone, there have been other smart phones, but the Storm appeals to those who've been hooked on BlackBerry at work.

"I like it 'cause just being a BlackBerry you can hook up to enterpriser server for the office, get all the stuff plus the consumer features: the videos, the pictures, all those things that make it useful at home," said Josh Rohrback, customer.

A spokesman for Verizon explains the Storm's features and how it differs from Apple's iPhone.

"It's got a replaceable battery expandable memory. It's a global device so it works around the world. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera and flash built in and you can send pictures and videos directly from your phone," said John Johnson.

If you want to buy someone a smart phone this Christmas, don't forget they will have the additional expense of data service each month.

The iPhone and several other smart phones since, including the new Blackberry, are all just under $200. The touchscreen on the Blackberry has a new feature. Touch it once, it lights up, touch it twice, you feel a click.

The Storm sold out Friday at the Columbia store, but the store stayed crowded all day when customers were promised more are arriving Friday night and Saturday.

The Storm also works as a GPS device, giving spoken directions from anywhere in the world.
