Lawmakers Add To Calls For Probe Of Sewage Sludge
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
More lawmakers are seeking investigations into federally funded research in poor, black neighborhoods on how sewage sludge might combat lead poisoning in children.
Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland wrote departing Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson Thursday asking why HUD picked nine Baltimore families for the study.
Republican Congressman Darrell Issa of California now wants an investigation by a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The Senate Environment Committee will hold a hearing this summer whether the research was ethical.
The Associated Press reported last Sunday how researchers spread the wastes on lawns in Baltimore and a lot next to an elementary school in Illinois.
