Slots Supporters Boost Efforts As Support Drops

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Supporters of a November referendum to authorize slots gambling are stepping up their efforts as polls show support is dropping in Maryland.

Slots supporters have hired more than 200 canvassers, are planning an extensive radio and television campaign and have posted a new video on the Internet.

Meanwhile, Gov. Martin O'Malley, who criticized slots as a "morally bankrupt" way to fund education when he was Baltimore's mayor, is supporting the referendum as a way to help ease the state's budget problems.

While the state is not expected to receive money from slots for several years if the referendum passes, supporters say it could provide $600 million a year.
