Opposition To Slots Not Unanimous In Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) ―

There's plenty of opposition to slot machines in Ocean City. But it's far from unanimous.

If Maryland voters legalize slots in a referendum this fall, Ocean Downs is the likely site for a casino with 2,500 machines.

The harness racing track in Berlin is five miles from the beach.

Town officials are worried that slots will draw tourists away from the resort's boardwalk and shops -- or make them avoid Ocean City altogether.

Mayor Rick Meehan says there's no sense messing with the $100 million a year that the town generates for the state.

The local Chamber of Commerce also claims consensus opposition to slots.

But Governor Martin O'Malley says he's spoken to business people who support bringing slots to Ocean Downs.

Anna Dolle Bushnell, the owner of a candy shop on the boardwalk, says she thinks slots might boost business in the offseason.
