Slots Referendum Language Due
BALTIMORE (AP) ―
Maryland Secretary of State John McDonough has until 5 p.m. Monday to submit certified language for the upcoming slots referendum to the State Board of Elections.
Slots opponents have questioned McDonough's neutrality, because he worked as a lobbyist for Rosecroft Raceway for 21 years. Officials with Marylanders United to Stop Slots have said they would consider a lawsuit challenging the language of the referendum.
Slots supporters dismiss the idea that McDonough would craft language that isn't neutral. They say he must draft a question with language that is identical to the legislation that set the referendum.
The proposed constitutional amendment calls for 15,000 video lottery terminals at five specific locations.
